Call of Duty Elite Subscribers Finally See Benefits

10 01 2012

Call of Duty Elite Members are finally getting to see some of the benefits from their $50 contribution to Activision pay off.  With the launch of the COD Elite iOS app today, and now with the announcement of Modern Warfare 3’s first DLC scheduled to hit Xbox 360 January 24th.  This is the first installment of proposed 20 DLC “pieces” over the next 3 months.  The hefty claim will include multiplayer maps, spec ops missions, game modes and “more”.  All of which Call of Duty Elite members on Xbox will get first dibs on.  Activision has set no date for Playstation 3 and PC releases.

Activision plans on releasing these DLC’s in or around March as “Modern Warfare 3 Content Collections” for us lowly non-Elite souls.  No prices for any of this content has been announced yet.  Let’s just assume it’ll be around the $15 range it always is.

I’ll be curious to see what worthwhile content will be coming out next.

Call of Duty MW3 Edition Jeep Spotted in Las Vegas

17 12 2011

Doctors...

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: MW3 Edition was spotted this morning at UMC in Las Vegas.  Apparently one of the Docs there is a HUGE fan of the Call of Duty franchise.  So much so, as you can see, he purchased this brand new Elite Edition that MSRP’s at around $40k.  Not too shabby, but way more than I would spend on anything game related.  Even if Dirt released a STI Subaru or Factory Fiesta I would have a difficult time dropping that kind of dough.  But to each it’s own, that Jeep could really kick some off road ass for all I know.  But enjoy the pics, the Jeep is really clean and does look pretty damn sharp.

Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3? The Debate.

25 11 2011

Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3?

For at least a year this will be the debate fanboys of every console will be yelling obscenities over defending their sacred title.  But I question, why does one have to be better than the other?  When friends ask me which one I play, I reply with “both”.  I own and play both on a regular basis.  I actually prefer Battlefield 3 because I enjoy large maps and vehicles.  I’ll drive the shit out of a tank and destroy everything, that’s what I like.  But I also like to hop onto MW3 and just mindlessly run and gun sometimes.  But what if you don’t have the luxury of owning both?  What about the gamer on a budget?  Well my friends, you’re in luck because I’m going to break down each games defining qualities to help with your decision before you hop on Santa’s lap and ask for one or the other this holiday season.  This guide is going to be incredibly simple and easy to follow, it’s based on what your likes and dislikes are.  Enjoy.

Battlefield 3

  • The single player runs approximately 8 hours and is based on a marine and his squad, different vehicles, and the majority of combat taking place in the dusty streets of Iran.

Multiplayer

  • Very large maps.
  • Popular game modes include: Team Deathmatch, Rush, and Conquest.  Hardcore modes are also available.
  • The rank cap is 45 with numerous guns to unlock.
  • 4 basic classes to choose from: Assault, Recon, Engineer and Support.
  • Each weapon has 10 attachments, and other weapons can only be unlocked successfully by beating the co-op missions.
  • Multiplayer is very squad based, requiring teamwork to be successful.
  • Vehicles are in most modes (not in Team Deathmatch).  Tanks, choppers, Hum-V’s, jets, etc.
  • Co-op missions are available, experience transfers over to multiplayer, and it gives you an opportunity to practice flying…since it’s not easy.

I enjoyed BF3’s single player more than MW3, but I rarely play BF3 multiplayer alone since it’s so squad intensive.  The ranking system is very in depth and takes lots of play time to promote.  Each class levels up on it’s own, requiring you to spend individual time with each.  BF3 is a huge title that definitely gets you your moneys worth.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

  • The single player lasts a meager 5 1/2 hours and is filled with Michael Baysplosions and cinematic thrill rides.  The mediocre story holds back this titles full potential, but it’s still a positive and fun experience.

Multiplayer

  • Small tight maps with plenty of bottle necks.
  • Popular modes include: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy, Sabotage, and the fresh and new Kill Confirmed mode.
  • Level cap is 80 with 10 further prestige levels.
  • You can customize 5 loadouts with any weapon you would like.  Each weapon used unlocks special attachments and specializations.  Strike packages with each loadout are completely customizable and can be used to assist your teammates or make you look like a god.  You choose.
  • Multiplayer is very fast paced and requires quick twitch reflexes.  “Spray and pray” is also optional and proves to be successful quite often.
  • MW3 has other multiplayer options including Spec-ops and Survival modes.
  • The $50 Call of Duty: Elite service allows you to check stats and get multiplayer maps on a monthly basis.  (saving you about $15 a year)

MW3 is meant for those looking for instant gratification reinforced with nonstop action.  I play MW3 a majority of the time alone.  Games don’t require a lot of teamwork, and you can be very successful alone in many of the game’s modes.  MW3 keeps you reaching for that next level, or that one attachment you need for your favorite weapon.  Sledgehammer Games didn’t wander too far from the MW2 model, proving if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.  MW3 does still have hacker problems, USB memory hacks and exploited connection issues are still a factor so tread lightly.

When you tell Santa which one you want, be sure to tell him Nerd Farm helped you choose.  We’re actually tying to not get coal this year…

A Single Player Take on Modern Warfare 3

12 11 2011

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Single Player) Review

Srsbizniz was nice enough to give Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer high marks, but my single player review of MW3 isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just not that great.  Have you played MW2?  If you have, than you’re in for no surprises.  Hitting the ground running, MW3 continues the ongoing story of MW2.  Boasting a whopping 5 1/2 hour campaign with no real plot twists or unexpected outcomes, MW3 is a cinematic epic FPS on rails.  It did have some “shock factor” moments though; *SPOILER* when killing an airport full of civilians just isn’t enough, you kill a child on vacation.  I’m not upset with the scene, but it didn’t add anything to the story, maybe it was there to induce some anger deep down inside of me for Makarov, but it didn’t, and it didn’t really shock me either.  Infinity Ward definitely went for broke, que the Michael Baysplosions and death defying escapes, in which you survive and limp away from…often.  MW3 does not slow down and is continually dragging you along for the ride, there is no rest for the wicked.

Everything isn’t subpar though, Modern Warfare 3 does have improved graphics and weapon mechanics.  The city scapes were impressive, but you get little time to enjoy the scenery while being shot in the face.  While I knew what cities I was fighting in, I didn’t recognize them, it didn’t feel like I was fighting in NY or Paris even after seeing iconic landmarks.  It just felt too surreal.  Cinematics transition in and out of action smoothly, but made the game feel too much like an interactive movie, and less like a video game, taking too much control out of the players hands.

Modern Warfare 3 is an over the top action adventure filled with plenty of head shots and explosions.  The game continues to be in your face screaming, yelling and tugging at you to move along.  It’s hard to complain about constant action, it’s really an action movie lover’s wet dream.  But the lack of an intriguing story and strong characters, besides  Capt. Price, there’s much left to be desired.  The game does end with much needed closure concerning Makarov, and finishes with everything we already knew about Price.  He’s a bad ass.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (single player) scores a B.

FPS WAR SHOOTER 2012

8 11 2011

Now before you get all uppity reading the header, don’t take it the wrong way. I LIKE the Modern Warfare franchise. I like the leveling up, I like the myriad of multiplayer modes, and the piles and piles of weapons and upgrades they throw at you. But to be quite truthful, this “MOST ANTICIPATED GAME OF THE CENTURY” title does for the first person shooter genre what Madden does for football.

Lets look at the pro’s: Solid game play, quick and rewarding level system, most of the time you will be matched with players of the same skill level (MOST of the time) and all in all this installment doesn’t, to me, let anything feel too over powered. They have taken the kill streaks and put them in to two separate categories so that no one player can have TOO much firepower. The perks have been reworked and altered slightly so you shouldn’t be seeing a “god-mode” set up any time real soon. One gripe I have though is the Support kill streak package, which allows a player to obtain extra perks instead of weapons for his or her kill streak rewards, and I think this alone will lead to many god mode combos and rage quits (a small few probably by yours truly). But over all the MW Team took a winning formula, played it safe and had another major success.

One new game mode is “Kill Confirmed” which is a team deathmatch variant which not only requires kills to win the game but promotes Non-Camper style gameplay in that it requires players to pick up gold dog tags dropped by their kills and “deny” kills by picking up red dog tags dropped by teammates. This mode is my particular favorite especially in hardcore mode, although I notice my teammates seem to be either nowhere to be found while I am being shot or looking the opposite direction until I’m dead. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

If you are looking for tried and true “if its not broke don’t fix it” game play, modes you know were good and are good again, I recommend Modern Warfare 3.  You can’t go wrong with a good thing.

Get Your Modern Warfare 3 on Early

3 11 2011

This morning around 5 a.m. PST Kotaku reported that a Kmart in Tampa, Florida had sold copies of Modern Warfare 3 for PS3 early by mistake.  Apparently boxes sent to Kmart were marked for immediate sale, so the employees unknowingly put them out on their store shelves.  After receiving this news I got off work and went down to my two local Kmarts to see if I could get my grubby little hands on a copy.

A pic circulating around the web of a PS3 copy from the Tampa Kmart.

My quest for an early copy of MW3 was almost a success.  The first Kmart I went to did in fact have an empty spot marked for MW3.  I asked an attendant if there were copies in the back, he checked and confirmed there were 95 copies in the store.  He informed me he would have to get a hold of the electronics clerk for verification.  The electronics clerk suspected the games release was this coming Tuesday and consulted this weeks Kmart add.  There it was, releasing 11/08/2011, as if the stand up posterboard I was standing near with the MWS logo and date weren’t enough.  I hit up the next Kmart about 15 minutes away with the same result, a marked empty spot for MW3 and a clerk who consulted last weeks releases to confirm it didn’t come out then.  I have a feeling this mistake was only made at the Tampa location, but it at least was worth a try.  But as a side note, Kmart is selling MW3 for $10 off if you buy a 12 pack of Mt. Dew with a pack of Doritos using their rewards card.  So you have that going for you.

New MW3 Weapons You’ll Love to Hate

30 10 2011

Watching the new Modern Warfare 3 Weapon Progression trailer got me both pumped for it’s upcoming release, but also brought me back down to why I hated Modern Warfare 2 the majority of the time.  Overpowered blasters.  Guns that when you pull that trigger, you just hold it down and let it do the rest of the work for you.  In the trailer you’ll notice lots of hip firing kills that aren’t on target, and also a lot of ankle slaying.  They bring in the Weapon Proficiencies, which are nothing new, allowing you to reduce kick (that’s almost already non existent) and also melee faster.  Did they not learn from the Lightweight/Marathon/quick blade bs?  And now they’re introducing 3 weapons that I know people are just going to be crying over in the lobbies.  The PP90M1, Bouncing Betty, and the XM25 Grenade Launcher.  PP90M1 looked like it had no kick at all, apparently claymores arent annoying enough so they wanted to throw in Bouncing Betties, and now they added a Grenade Launcher with crosshairs…I know I’m ranting about all this shit, but I’m really looking forward to this game, and all of these new weapons that I know are going to kill my gaming experience, hurt me a little inside.  Well Infinity Ward, looks like I’m ditching the honorable path, and I’m diving face first into the Pro Tube, XM25, Bouncing Betty fan club.  See all you suckers on the other side of my overpowered grenades.
